pups the pug - 1 year old today

It's been a crazy time since getting Pups the pug, I can't actually believe he's one year old today. I've wanted a pug for as long as I could remember and I was the happiest girl in the world when I first met him, two days later he was coming home with me and diamonds are a girls best friend Pups is my best friend. Despite his name causing some confusion when the vet thought I'd be bringing in more than one puppy and just hadn't got round to naming them yet, it really suits him now much better than some of the names we came up with (Preston, Presley and Pepper to name some). Pups was the puppy that slept a lot, ate a lot and was very quiet, which lasted all of a few months...

A year on, Pups is one of the noisiest dogs I've ever come across. He barks a lot. I mean, a ridiculous amount. Even when you think he's asleep he'll be listening to the TV and wake up to bark at it (his favourite programme is Paul O Grady For The Love Of Dogs). It's not been the easiest time with Pups and I'll admit we still have a lot of issues we're working on: Pups doesn't like vehicles or people other than me, my parents and my boyfriend. He's actually quite aggressive if they get very close to him, and he'll go absolutely mental if anyone other than us four come into the house. It's so strange and we can't pin point when he changed from being calm and letting everyone stroke him to really having his defences up when he's out. He really doesn't like the vets and seems to associate cars/people with going there. He went through months of screaming at cars and people, and his walks were limited to 5-10 minutes every couple of hours because it was almost unbearable. He's got a whole lot better and rarely screams, just the occasional bark now when he's out. He has had blood tests to check that it wasn't a liver shunt causing the aggression but they were clear, and for now it's still a mystery, fortunately he's improving every day. Thank goodness for pet insurance.

But Pups is the most loving dog in the world to us. He sleeps on my bed and sometimes he won't fall asleep until he's been held in my arms. He's got his spot on the sofa despite having his own bed downstairs too and looks so cute resting his head on the arm of the chair. Pups always rolls onto his back when he's too tired and doesn't want to be picked up, yet goes crazy when I get home from work or my boyfriend comes for the weekend. He's 95% toilet trained but does favour one of the curtains in the living room, so strange :/ He wakes me up every morning by snorting and sniffing in my face (gross), for some reason this always seems to be about 30mins-1hour before my alarm urgh!

He loves cuddles, and always loves to play. His favourite toy is a manky old penguin toy that lost its' squeak a long time ago. If you don't throw it, he will bring it right up to you and keep nudging you until you do. This can sometimes be very late at night or early in the morning, he's very active! He eats a lot but is constantly running around (he doesn't ever walk; great exercise for me!) which is why he isn't quite as chubby as some pugs, he also has really long legs. He still fits in the bowl in the kitchen sink for bathtime though, which he loves as he gets a little massage! He's very cheeky though and will jump up if you leave your chair out from the dining table to check if there's any food. He runs up the stairs himself and jumps onto the windowsill which is his favourite place to sit/lie in the daytime, especially if it's sunny. He's not mastered going down stairs but he does now understand two basic commands 'sit' and 'stay'.

So the past year has involved Pups having all of his vaccinations, being microchipped, playing in the snow for the first time, becoming the boss of the house and taking over my bed, winding my other dog up on a regular basis and in a few weeks going on his first holiday. He's not too bad travelling in the car, but thankfully we're taking two cars and he's going with my parents rather than me!

To celebrate his birthday he'll be getting some more toys, some new treats (puppy milk for up to 18months is his fave!) and a new harness. He's been spoilt in the past twelve months and has  got 3 beds, 9 coats and about 30 toys. I love him so, so much and he was worth every penny. I've been slowly trying to get round my dad to let us get another pug as all four of us love him more than anything and it would be great to have another addition to the family. I swear my eulogy will say "the crazy pug lady".

I post regular photos of Pups on my Instagram @rebeccalouiseee where you'll find photos of him from the very first day I got him!

yuko kokoro g shampoo and treatment

Yuko Kokoro G Shampoo - £12.50*
Yuko Kokoro G Treatment - £12.50*

When it comes down to the need to purchase new shampoos and conditioners, I've spent far too many years going for whatever's on offer and for 'normal hair' but let's face it, my hair isn't completely normal... it's got bleach blonde highlights, a definite beachy wave to it with dry ends and sometimes oily roots but dry scalp - confused? I know I am. My unruly locks have been screaming at me to open up something that's going to aid some of these issues. Bring in Yuko Kokoro G Shampoo and Treatment.

Both are packaged in simple, easy to use bottles with plenty of product for 3-4 weeks use. The shampoo at first almost appeared like an oil but was very light and easily lathered up with a little water. This really requires the smallest amount and massages really well into the scalp and hair. I tend to leave this on for 2-3 minutes, working it in before rinsing and continuing with the treatment. The treatment is an intensive conditioner and works like a frequent use hair mask. It reminds me of shaving foam slightly as it's quite thick but really lightweight. I apply to the mid lengths-ends and leave this on for about 5 minutes before rinsing and drying (I will be doing a haircare/styling routine post soon!). When washed out, hair felt very light and fresh with little sign of my previously dry scalp nor any noticeable scent. My hair has been incredibly soft and a lot more manageable with the use of this duo. The products contain keratin, sericin and algae which has reduced the amount my hair was breaking off over the period of 3 weeks of use.

Price wise they are quite a bit more than I'm used to paying, but I've realised it's just as important to have good haircare products as it is skincare. They've lasted me a really reasonable amount of time, using them every other day and they've even cut down on my obsession use of dry shampoos as my mane has been staying cleaner for longer.

Yuko's a Japanese brand, specialising in permanent hair straightening and semi-permanent anti-frizz treatments with their own salon in Mayfair, London. Luckily for me, they stock their products at lots of independent salons around the country including two in Coventry and are available online too.

ren moroccan rose otto bath and body oil

REN Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil (gift size* shown) - £30
REN Moroccan Rose Otto Ultra-Moisture Body Oil (gift size* shown) - £34

I've declared my love for REN facial skincare products quite regularly on my blog, but I finally got round to trying two bath/body products from the Rose Experience gift* I've had my mitts on since christmas, pulling them out for a pamper evening quite frequently over the past seven days. I run a hot bath (because us women love our water very hot!) and add a cap full of the bath oil. Usually with bath oils they leave a film in the water, but this little beauty turns water milky with a few bubbles that melt into the skin.

After a long soak with a good read (Allure magazine this time round) accompanied by the warming aroma of my favourite Yankee CandlesI hop out and give my skin a quick whiff... I fall for the subtle soft rose scent that lingers and notice how soft my skin already feels. I add a few pumps of the body oil, focusing on the elbows, knees and feet and am still enjoying stroking them an hour later. Smooth as a baby's bottom. Absorbed straight away yet leaves my skin hydrated for days.

Packaging's smart and simple and despite the products being slightly pricey (prices shown are for full size), these are definitely little luxuries that would make the world of difference to body and mind and bank balance. Now I just need to get my hands on the Sugar Body Polish in this range!

Have you tried any of REN's bath or body products?

mini reviews - vivo cream blush, w7 eyeshadow quad, l'oreal glamshine stain splash

Base today was made up of Estee Lauder Double Wear in 2C3 Fresco and a little Collection Lasting Perfection concealer, a combination I just wouldn't change. Skin's a lot more hydrated lately so the finish is natural and dewy when applied with the Real Techniques Pointed Foundation Brush, one that I've shunned in favour of the Buffing Brush all too often. The brush doesn't completely make it sink into the skin, but doesn't leave the foundation looking heavy either and is definitely one I'll be using more frequently.

Cheeks are graced with Vivo Cheeky Cream Blush in Bloom*, a softer peach shade that can easily be built up to a deeper orange toned coral. It dries quickly but looks warm and radiant on the skin with a long lasting finish. It does need a little warming up with the fingertips in the pan before the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush comes into play. This I use in a stippling effect on the tops of cheekbones and blend downwards lightly.

Eyelids have a dash of Rimmel Exaggerate Undercover shadow primer with a blend of two shadows from the W7 Silky Smooth Quad Eye Shadow in Shades of Blue*. Made up of four super shimmery soft shades, this quad is getting me away from the usual neutrals I opt for. I chose a champagne pink base applied with the RT Deluxe Crease Brush with just a hint of silver-sky blue from the Shading Brush. A palette with shadows that haven't faded throughout the day yet give a subtle and highlighting wash to the lids. Maybe next time I'll dare to use the bolder shades... Lashes are swept with Seventeen Doll'd Up mascara, my drugstore must have and brows filled in using a MAC 266 brush with the shade Naked2 from the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette*

Lips are lapping up the L'Oreal Glam Shine Stain Splash in 102 Romy* a very natural pink gloss-stain hybrid, two types of product I usually stay well away from. Moisturising and glossy without the stickiness, Romy doesn't make me worry about flyaway hairs getting stuck in it as it soon brings out its' stain element which sets in place for a good six hours. There's no dried out lips at the end of this and application is so darn easy!

ten nail polishes for spring/summer

(Left to Right)
Barry M Prickly Pear, Essie Cascade Cool, OPI If You Moust You Moust, Butter London Primrose Hill Picnic*, Models Own Lemon Meringue

You may be wondering why I've included three pinks in this post but I was so undecided! Pink is probably the most popular colour in my nail polish collection but I've added two more in the form of Essie Cascade Cool and OPI If Your Moust You Moust. Cascade Cool is my favourite as it's got lilac undertones and has really impressed me with it's wide brush and one coat opaqueness. All of these other shades are two coats opaque and scream summer, tans and ice cream.
 (Left to Right)
American Apparel Sunset Blvd*, Models Own Top Turquoise, Rimmel Sweet As Sugar, Topshop Hide & Seek, Barry M Lychee

These five are my Spring shades as they're not quite as hot and bold, definitely more muted for when the warmer weather creeps in. I had to add some more nudes to my collection this week in the form of Topshop Hide & Seek and Barry M Lychee as I'm seriously lacking. Lychee's turned into almost my favourite polish ever, it's the perfect neutral shade. Sweet as Sugar and Hide & Seek are 3 coats opaque but do build up a really nice hint of colour and would make the perfect base for a glitter polish. Top Turquoise always stands out to me on my wall polish display, such a lush aqua shade that's two coats opaque. Finally there's Sunset Blvd a hot red-orange that's one coat opaque... bring on the tan!

What are your Spring/Summer nail polish picks?

what i've bought #22

The fact that these posts are becoming weekly rather than monthly like I first intended is a little bit worrying. Am I a shopaholic? I haven't been too bad this week, I've used loads of deals and even found £15 on the floor in H&M... but I did cave after 5 months of not buying anymore nail polishes because I have enough to open a shop OOPS!
In Boots I picked up another of the No7 BB Lips as I had another £3 off voucher, this time I got the shade Ballerina. With my Boots Advantage Card Points I bought the Soap & Glory Sexy Motherpucker Gloss Stick in the shade Fuchsia-ristic and Barry M Gelly Hi Shine nail polish in Lychee as I had £13 to spend! I had a voucher for £2 off any lipstick or mascara so I chose another L'Oreal Rouge Caresse lip colour in 301 Dating Coral that I've wanted for ages, and finally I bought yet another Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in 01 Fair.
So I spent the £15 I found and the £5 on Debenhams Beauty Card to get me a new bottle of Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place Makeup in a shade that actually matches my skintone! I also picked up this Moisturising Lip Crayon from Primark, chubby stick dupe or what?!
Finally got round to making a Fragrance Direct order, there are some serious bargains on that website! I bought two Dainty Doll cream blushes in 001 and 002, Rimmel Kate Moss lipstick in 05, Essie Cascade Cool, OPI If You Moust You Moust and a L'Oreal Green Eyes Intensifier eyeshadow.
Lastly I bought another nude nail polish from Topshop in Hide & Seek and a lip bullet in the shade Joyride. No deals or bargains as such here, but I couldn't resist!

What have you bought this week?

l'oreal rouge caresse in 301 dating coral

You know when you swatch something but walk out of the shop without buying it yet can't get it out of your head? Well that happened to me with this shade, Dating Coral. I'm already a masssssive fan of the Rouge Caresse lip colours, this being my 8th and I'm so glad I did go back for it. It's an orange toned red that's slightly sheer yet very hydrating. It glides on beautifully, looks glossy without the stickiness and doesn't highlight any dry areas. At work I'm not very daring with my lip colours but this is the perfect addition to give me that little hint without being too bright. I love teaming this with a coral cream blush and dewy finish base. Packaging's very simple and the shape makes for easy application without the need for a mirror. Lasts around 3 hours but keeps a subtle wash without staining. It's a winner in my books, perfect for the summer and definitely a drugstore favourite.

What's your favourite lip product/shade for the Summer?
What are your drugstore faves?

the estee lauder base, lips and cheeks

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Makeup - £27.50
It's all too often after my monthly shopping spree that I have to take items back to shops in town... and by taking items back I mean exchanging and usually buying more. Well last weekend I went with very little money to the intention on not buying anything other than one shirt from Primark; I actually managed to do really well until I went into H&M to return two dresses and found £15 folded up on the floor in the queue! I was good and asked the girl in front of me if it was hers and she very honestly said no and told me to keep it, my lucky day! So with this I decided it was about time I finally went and picked up a new bottle of Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Makeup as I've been convinced for such a long time that the shade I was originally matched up to (and I'd repurchased once) wasn't the right one for me - I was matched to 2N1 Desert Beige which was always a bit too yellow toned. So armed with my £15 and another £5 on my Debenhams Beautycard I deemed it perfectly acceptable to purchase a new shade! I do love and hate beauty counters in that I always discover products that I'd never usually look at but love when they're applied on me and this time was no exception...

Firstly Michelle took off my make up using Take It Away Total Makeup Remover, a water based creme-gel on a cotton pad that felt very refreshing and gentle on the skin. She followed this with Idealist Pore Minimising Skin Refinisher, a serum which feels extremely silky when rubbed in, then added just a really small amount of Daywear Advanced Multi-Protection Anti-Oxidant Creme for dry skin as my skin is lacking a bit of moisture at the minute. This combination left my skin feeling so hydrated, smooth and already looking a million times healthier. Next came Double Wear Stay In Place Makeup which she matched me to 2C3 Fresco, a much more in the middle shade of yellow and pink toned. Using the Foundation Brush she buffed this in all over my face for an absolutely stunning soft, dewy finish.

After the base was complete it was time for a bit of colour in the form of shimmer finish Pure Colour Blush in the shade 08 Peach Passion. She applied this by picking some up on a cotton ball, then using the Blush Brush to take some from the cotton ball to add just a flush of peachy pink goodness to the apples of my cheeks and even the teeniest hint on my chin (I was sceptical but it looked really good!).

Lastly a touch of Pure Colour Gloss in the shade 09 Rock Candy, another peach pink with a little glitter running through it. I'm not usually a gloss fan but this has changed everything. I first thought she applied too much and that it felt very thick, but it quickly dried down to a comfortable yet gorgeous finish that lasted for a good 3 hours, so impressed.

The whole look looked natural and radiant, maintaining it's finish for the rest of the afternoon and evening. I only purchased Double Wear on this occasion, but I'm going back to buy Idealist and Rock Candy when I next get paid... oh and a MAC foundation pump too so I don't waste all of it! Really happy with my experience at the Estee Lauder counter in Debenhams, Coventry.

Do you like to have mini makeovers at beauty counters?
Or do you prefer to have just a quick swatch by yourself?

clarins pure melt cleansing gel

Clarins Pure Melt Cleansing Gel - £19.50

When I ran out of my Emma Hardie and REN cleansing balms, I was quick to scour the internet to find a new cleanser and decided on this one. Clarins Pure Melt Cleansing Gel is designed for all skin types (mine being dry-combination) and literally melts make up off including strong mascaras. I warm the smallest amount up in my hands, apply in circular motions to dry skin before adding a little warm water and using a muslin cloth to remove. On the skin the gel like texture transforms into a light, non greasy, lathered oil which takes with it every last trace and leaves my skin clear, smooth and bright.

Packaging is easy to use and you get plenty of product for the price, I've been using it for just over a month and I've still about 1/4 left. It's the first product I've ever tried from Clarins but I now have such a huge wishlist of both skincare and make up; if I was a rich girl...

I like that I can use it on my eyes with no worry of them being agitated and that it's not broken me out! It's much cheaper than my E.H. favourite and more hygienic too as I'm not putting my fingers into it so it's an all round winner for me. Despite experimenting with other cleansers, I use this on pamper nights as it does feel very luxurious and massages well. Nothing to fault with this, it doesn't have too much of a scent and is so gentle.

How do you like your cleanser to be? Gel, balm, cream, hot cloth etc?
Recommend me some Clarins products!
